The Court also said that the strongest response is not force, but listening. It said authorities should listen to what the students are saying and understand why they are protesting. The Supreme Court added that young protesters may need counselling, advice and peaceful handling instead of an aggressive response from the State. The Court warned that aggression by authorities may unnecessarily worsen the situation and create further violence. At the same time, the Court did not say that violence by protesters should be ignored. Reports said the Court made it clear that incidents like stone-pelting cannot be accepted and those responsible can be dealt with according to law. The Court tagged this case with other pending petitions related to student protest violence, meaning similar matters will be heard together. It also said law enforcement agencies are better placed to handle ground situations, and the Court will consider the Central Government’s stand on the next hearing date.

PM PRANAM Promotes Balanced Fertilizer Use Organic Farming and Better Soil Health

The Central Government is promoting PM-PRANAM, a scheme meant to reduce the overuse of chemical fertilizers and improve soil health. The scheme encourages States and Union Territories to use fertilizers like urea, DAP, NPK and MOP in a balanced way, while also promoting organic farming, natural farming, alternative fertilizers and resource-saving technologies. PM-PRANAM was approved on 28th June 2023 for the period 2023-24 to 2025-26. Under the scheme, if a State or Union Territory reduces chemical fertilizer consumption compared to the average of the previous three financial years, it can receive an incentive equal to 50% of the fertilizer subsidy saved. Out of this, 95% goes to the State or Union Territory and 5% stays with the Central Government. From the State share, 65% is for capital projects and 30% is for other activities such as awareness and education campaigns. In 2025-26, five States and Union Territories reduced chemical fertilizer use under the scheme. These were Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Delhi, Goa, Manipur and Mizoram. Together, they reduced consumption by 0.18 lakh metric tonnes compared to the previous three-year average. However, the government said the incentive amount has not yet been disbursed. The government is also supporting organic farming through PKVY and MOVCDNER. Under PKVY, farmers receive ₹31,500 per hectare over three years, including ₹15,000 directly to farmers for organic inputs. Since the scheme began, 18.93 lakh hectares have been covered, 33.63 lakh farmers benefited and ₹2,811.36 crore has been released as Central share. Under MOVCDNER, which focuses on the North East, assistance of ₹46,500 per hectare over three years is provided. Since its launch, 2.36 lakh hectares have been brought under organic farming, 2.74 lakh farmers benefited and ₹1,548.62 crore has been released as Central share. The government is also implementing the National Mission on Natural Farming, launched on 25 November 2024, with a total outlay of ₹2,481 crore. Farmers adopting natural farming can get ₹4,000 per acre per year for two years, limited to one acre per farmer. In 2025-26, the mission formed 18,893 clusters, covered 10.32 lakh hectares, involved 20.93 lakh farmers, trained 33,257 Krishi Sakhis and Community Resource Persons, and set up 7,601 Bio-Input Resource Centres. The mission also created awareness among 33.89 lakh farmers, collected 18.13 lakh soil samples, used ₹599.68 crore out of a ₹725 crore budget, registered more than 22.47 lakh farmers under the Natural Farming Certification System and certified more than 14.43 lakh farmers. To improve fertilizer efficiency, ICAR has developed drip fertigation and nutrient management programmes for 50 crops in 14 agro-ecological zones. The government is also promoting farm yard manure, vermicompost, phosphocompost, bio-enriched compost, municipal waste compost and fermented organic manure through training, demonstrations and awareness programmes.

Yuva Sangam Phase VII Opens Registration for Youth to Explore India’s Culture and Diversity

The Ministry of Education has opened registration for Yuva Sangam Phase VII under the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat programme. This is a youth exchange programme where selected young people from one State or Union Territory will visit another paired State or Union Territory to understand its culture, traditions, education system, development work and daily life. Registration is available through the official EBSB AICTE portal, and the last date to apply is 18 August 2026. This programme is open to young people aged 18 to 30 years. Students studying in higher education institutions, NSS volunteers, NYKS volunteers, young professionals and other eligible youth can apply. In simple words, this is not only for college students. It is also open to active young people who want to learn about different parts of India through travel and direct experience. For this phase, 20 major higher education institutions have been selected as nodal institutions. These include IITs, IIMs, Central Universities and NITs. These institutions will help organise and manage the exchange visits. They will support the selected participants during the programme and coordinate the cultural and educational activities. Selected participants will go on five-to-seven-day educational and cultural tours to their paired State or Union Territory. Travel days are not counted in this duration. During the visit, participants will see local traditions, educational institutions, governance projects, innovation centres, industries, heritage places and community life. The aim is to help young people experience another region of India directly instead of only reading about it. Some of the State pairings for Phase VII include Uttar Pradesh with Kerala, Rajasthan with Sikkim, and Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh with Maharashtra. Other pairings include Madhya Pradesh with Karnataka, Assam with Telangana, Goa with Mizoram, West Bengal with Uttarakhand, Chandigarh with Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh with Odisha, and Delhi with Tamil Nadu. The programme is based on five main themes called the 5 Ps. These are Paryatan, which means tourism; Parampara, which means traditions and culture; Pragati, which means development and governance; Paraspar Sampark, which means people-to-people connection; and Prodyogiki, which means technology and innovation. Through these themes, participants will learn how different States live, work, grow and preserve their culture. The purpose of Yuva Sangam is to build stronger emotional connections among young Indians from different regions. It helps youth understand that India has many languages, traditions, food habits, lifestyles and cultures, but still remains one nation. The programme also aims to reduce regional stereotypes and create respect for India’s diversity. This programme also supports the spirit of the National Education Policy 2020, which encourages learning through real-life exposure and experience. Instead of only classroom learning, students and young professionals get a chance to travel, interact with people, observe development models and understand the culture of another region. In simple terms, Yuva Sangam Phase VII is a government-supported opportunity for youth to travel to another part of India, learn about its people and culture, and return with a better understanding of national unity. Eligible youth who are interested must apply online before 18 August 2026 through the official EBSB AICTE portal.
