SpaceX Rocket Accidentally Slams Into Moon at 8,700 Kmph!
A massive four-tonne piece of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket stage accidentally slammed into the Moon on August 5, 2026, at an incredible speed of 8,700 km/h-roughly seven times the speed of sound. The high-velocity impact unleashed energy equivalent to three tons of TNT, blasting open a massive crater up to 100 feet wide on the lunar surface. Even though the collision kicked up a miles-long cloud of moon dust and rock debris, the crash is far too distant to be seen from Earth with the naked eye and poses absolutely no danger to our planet.
The wild crash occurred because the unguided rocket stage was left floating blindly in space after delivering lunar lander payloads back in January 2025. Because sending spacecraft toward the Moon requires enormous energy, the rocket stage completely exhausted its fuel, leaving it with no engine power to steer back to Earth or burn up in our atmosphere. Over 18 months of drifting, continuous gravitational pulls from the Earth and Moon, combined with intense solar activity, slowly nudged the heavy space debris onto an unavoidable collision course.
SpaceX and NASA confirmed that while the crash was an unplanned event caused by natural forces, scientists are using it as a rare opportunity to study high-speed impacts. Lunar satellites from NASA and South Korea are now scanning the impact site to take high-resolution photos of the new crater, helping researchers better understand the Moon's surface composition and improve future space debris tracking.
