No More 'Energy Drinks' in India! Government Bans Popular Label-Red Bull, Sting, and Monster Given 90 Days to Change Names

·

If you regularly buy drinks like Red Bull, Sting, Monster, or Hell Energy thinking they give you special health or performance benefits, here is a major update you need to know. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has ordered major beverage companies to completely remove the words "Energy Drink" from their product cans, packaging, and advertisements within 90 days. The food safety regulator clarified that there is no official category recognized as an "energy drink" under Indian food safety rules, and these products must instead be legally labeled as "caffeinated beverages".

The government took this strict step after observing that misleading packaging and catchphrases-such as "vitalises body and mind" or "helps in general weakness"-were tricking consumers into believing these high-caffeine beverages offer genuine health benefits. Top beverage makers including PepsiCo, Red Bull, Monster, Reliance, and Hell Energy held high-level meetings with FSSAI officials, but the regulator stood firm and refused to give any extension or relax the rules.

As a result, advertising agencies and drink manufacturers are currently scrambling to redesign their packaging and rewrite multi-crore marketing campaigns without using the word "energy". While the drink formulas and taste will stay exactly the same, brands like PepsiCo's Sting have already started updating their labels to comply with the directive. For everyday shoppers, this means that the next time you pick up one of these cans at a local store, it will clearly tell you it is a "caffeinated beverage" rather than an "energy drink".
