"Prashant Kishor Scripts Historic Bankipur Win": Jan Suraaj Ends BJP’s 30-Year Citadel In Bihar Bypoll

In a major political upset in Bihar, Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor has won the Bankipur Assembly by-election on Monday, August 3, 2026, defeating Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha by a margin of 18,953 votes. According to final figures released by the Election Commission of India, Kishor polled 63,203 votes, while the BJP's candidate secured 44,250 votes. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate Rekha Kumari finished a distant third with 14,085 votes.

The high-stakes by-election, held on July 30, was necessitated after sitting BJP MLA Nitin Nabin vacated the seat following his election to the Rajya Sabha. Bankipur previously known as Patna West had remained an unassailable fortress for the BJP since 1995. The victory marks the first-ever electoral win for Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj Party and secures the poll strategist-turned-politician his maiden entry into the Bihar Legislative Assembly.

Celebrating the historic win, Jan Suraaj supporters gathered outside the counting center at Patna’s AN College to distribute sweets and dance to local songs. Speaking after his victory, Prashant Kishor thanked the voters of Bankipur for breaking traditional caste-based voting patterns and trusting his vision for development, employment, and governance reform. Political analysts observe that ending the BJP's three-decade hold over Bankipur reshapes Bihar’s political landscape, establishing Jan Suraaj as a powerful new force in state politics.
