Big Financial Boost For Andhra Pradesh! Centre Releases ₹4,597 Crore Tax Devolution Early To Help State Fight Mega Debt Crisis
In a major financial relief for Andhra Pradesh, the Central Government has released an additional tax devolution amount of ₹4,597 crore to the state ahead of its scheduled August 10 date. Expressing his gratitude on behalf of the state, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for this timely support. The Chief Minister stated that these extra funds will give immediate strength to the state treasury, helping to speed up stalled development projects and support key public welfare programs across Andhra Pradesh.
Tax devolution is the constitutional mechanism under Article 280 of the Indian Constitution through which the Centre shares 41 percent of its central tax collections-such as GST, Income Tax, and Corporate Tax-with state governments. Under normal procedures, these funds are transferred in twelve regular monthly installments. However, receiving an early financial transfer provides crucial direct liquidity, allowing state governments to clear urgent pending bills and pay salaries without having to take on extra high-interest market loans.
This early release comes at a critical time as Andhra Pradesh battles severe financial strain, with total liabilities, off-budget borrowings, and unpaid dues reaching approximately ₹9.74 lakh crore. The state treasury currently faces an immediate backlog of nearly ₹1.40 lakh crore in unpaid contractor bills and pending employee dues, alongside historical revenue imbalances created after the 2014 state bifurcation. By providing this ₹4,597 crore tax boost early, the Central Government has offered vital cash flow relief, giving the state government much-needed support to stabilize its exchequer and drive economic recovery.
