91% Of Delhi-NCR Industries Miss Emission Deadline! CAQM Extends Pollution Control Cutoff To October 1

In a major environmental development, over 2,100 large and medium industrial units across the Delhi-NCR region accounting for nearly 91.4% of total identified plants have failed to comply with stricter particulate matter (PM) emission norms. Under the original mandate set by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), these high-polluting industrial sectors were required to install or retrofit Air Pollution Control Devices (APCDs) to cap PM emissions at 50 mg/Nm³ by August 1, 2026. Out of 2,321 targeted units, only about 200 factories managed to achieve full compliance before the August deadline.

Prompted by the massive compliance gap, the CAQM issued an official amendment extending the implementation deadline by two months to October 1, 2026. The decision came after several industrial associations cited severe practical challenges, including supply chain disruptions linked to global geopolitical crises, delayed equipment deliveries, a shortage of technical agencies to assess pollution control systems, and limited certified testing laboratories. Industrial emissions remain a critical precursor to winter smog in the capital, accounting for over a third of secondary and direct particulate pollution across the National Capital Region.

While the regulatory body granted this temporary relief to give factories adequate time for retrofitting and installation, authorities stressed that the stringent 50 mg/Nm³ limit remains mandatory and environmentally necessary. Strict monitoring by CAQM flying squads and state pollution boards will continue, with non-compliant industrial units facing potential closure orders, heavy environmental compensation fines, and operational bans once the extended October deadline expires.
