America's Diesel Nightmare.. California Pumps Hit $9.999/Gallon, Displays Max Out.. Is India Next?

Diesel prices in the US have exploded to levels never seen before. The national average hit $6.16 per gallon on Saturday -nearly double last year's $3.70. But California is in a league of its own: several gas stations have hit $9.999 a gallon, maxing out their digital pump displays because they simply cannot show a higher number. Just 30 days ago, the same gallon cost $5.38 - a staggering jump in a single month.
The driver behind this chaos is the ongoing war with Iran. Diesel prices have surged more than 55% since the conflict began - far outpacing the 40% rise in gasoline. Here's the twist: crude oil itself is actually cheaper than it was during the 2022 record, yet diesel just keeps climbing, because the world's refineries are the ones under siege. War damage to refineries across the Middle East and Russia, Russia cutting its own diesel exports to avoid domestic shortages, and China restricting exports too - all combined to choke global diesel supply.
Because diesel is the "workhorse fuel" powering the world economy, the fallout is spreading everywhere. Everything hauled by trucks, trains, and ships - clothing, cosmetics, furniture, groceries - is about to get pricier. And with the fall harvest season kicking off, diesel-dependent farm equipment means food prices could spike sharply too, according to a Goldman Sachs warning. Countries like Nigeria, Indonesia, and Lebanon have already seen fuel prices jump 80-90%, and experts warn African and Asian economies will be hit hardest.
India isn't immune either. The country imports 85% of its oil, with diesel making up 40% of that usage. If global prices stay this high, state refiners like Indian Oil could be forced to raise pump prices - and that means higher costs for transport, food, and everyday essentials hitting the common man's wallet.
