Water Crisis Grips Vizag's MVV City.. 6,000 Residents Go 4 Days Without Water.. Midnight Protest Erupts!
Visakhapatnam's ongoing water crisis reached a boiling point on September 12, 2026, at MVV City in Yendada - the city's largest gated community. Home to about 6,000 people across 1,400 flats, the complex went four consecutive days without a single drop of water for drinking, cooking, or basic sanitation. Frustrated by dry taps and unfulfilled promises, hundreds of residents marched out in the middle of the night to stage a major protest at the local Yendada Water Tank Office, demanding that the municipal corporation take immediate action to fix the broken system.
The crisis stems from a dangerous combination of rapid construction and severe environmental strain. Visakhapatnam has suffered a drastic 47.89% shortfall in monsoon rainfall, causing local water bodies like the Mudasarlova reservoir to dry up completely. Compounding the problem, the groundwater table has collapsed, with regional data showing levels plummeting by an alarming 3.86 metres in just one year. Because the Yendada-Madhurawada area has grown so fast with massive concrete high-rises, rainwater can no longer seep into the soil to recharge groundwater, causing the community's deep borewells to fail entirely.
With their own wells dry, MVV City became fully dependent on outside water - but the delivery system broke down. The community needs at least 12 large municipal tankers daily to survive, but the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation's (GVMC) official portal capped orders at a maximum of 10, and in reality only 4 tankers were actually delivered. Piped municipal water was also rationed to just 20 minutes every two days. Left with no choice, desperate residents turned to private water tankers, who exploited the crisis by charging surge prices between ₹5,000 and ₹7,000 per trip.
Following the public outcry, city authorities rushed to deploy emergency measures. GVMC officials ordered immediate pumping from the Yeleru Canal to refill local storage tanks, and temporarily increased the local water supply window to 45 minutes. City leaders also announced rapid desilting operations on the canal to boost water flow and build a stronger reserve for the future. Looking ahead, urban planners insist mega-complexes must change how they manage water - installing functioning rainwater harvesting pits and recycled greywater systems for flushing and gardening, measures that could cut a community's freshwater needs by up to 40%.
