Sushmitha Konidela Appointed Special Invitee to Vijayawada Durga Temple Trust Board

The Andhra Pradesh Endowments Department has officially appointed Konidela Sushmitha, Megastar Chiranjeevi's eldest daughter and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan's niece, as a Special Invitee to the Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy Varla Devasthanam Trust Board atop Indrakeeladri in Vijayawada. The notification, issued by Endowments Department Secretary S. Satyanarayana (Kannababu), marks the induction of another prominent member of the "Mega family" into an influential religious governing body.

Sushmitha, a well-known costume designer, stylist, and head of film production house Gold Box Entertainment, will join the temple's apex administrative deliberations alongside newly appointed Chairman Borra Radhakrishna and the 16-member trust board. As Special Invitee, she is expected to play an advisory role in policy formulation, upgrading devotee amenities, and planning crowd-management logistics ahead of the temple's flagship Dasara Navaratri festivities, which draw millions of pilgrims from across India.

The appointment comes amid an aggressive rollout of nominated posts across state-run corporations and temple trusts by the TDP-JSP-BJP coalition. The Durga temple, ranked as Andhra Pradesh's second most prominent shrine after Tirumala, recently saw its board reconstituted with 16 members split across the three alliance partners, including Avvaru Srinivasa Rao (BJP), Padmavathi Thakur (JSP), and Badeti Dharmarao (TDP). Sushmitha's induction follows a similar pattern seen elsewhere, coming weeks after Chiranjeevi's wife, Surekha Konidela, was inducted into the Yadagirigutta Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple Trust Board by the Telangana government.

The move has triggered sharp political controversy. YSRCP leaders and supporters have accused the coalition of blatant nepotism, arguing that while grassroots cadres wait years for nominated posts, coveted positions are increasingly concentrated within the families of ruling political elites. Coalition spokespersons and Jana Sena supporters have pushed back, noting that temple boards have historically included prominent cultural and philanthropic figures, and pointing to Sushmitha's corporate management experience as an asset for modernizing pilgrim facilities and festival coordination, without drawing a political salary.

With the board now in place, its first major test will be managing crowd logistics, VIP protocol, and prasad distribution during the high-stakes Navaratri festival season.
