India Draws Uncompromising Red Line at UN - Any Global Map Must Accurately Depict Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh

Any UN-backed world map must depict the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh strictly in accordance with India's official boundaries, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has asserted, declaring any "inaccurate" or "misleading" representation unacceptable. Addressing media on Sunday, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India's position on sovereignty and territorial integrity is "clear, consistent, and non-negotiable."

The statement follows New Delhi's vote in favour of the "Correct the Map" resolution, sponsored by Togo on behalf of the African Group. The non-binding resolution passed with 164 votes in favour, six abstentions, and a lone dissenting vote from the United States. It seeks to phase out the 16th-century Mercator projection - which shrinks Africa to the visual size of Greenland despite being 14 times larger - in favour of equal-area projections.

The flashpoint is that modern models like the 2018 "Equal Earth" projection often incorrectly place parts of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh within Pakistan and China's borders. In India's Explanation of Vote, First Secretary Raghoo Puri clarified that while New Delhi supports the scientific principle of equal-area projections, the resolution does not endorse the Equal Earth map or authenticate any political boundaries or disputed territories. India thus signaled support for equitable representation for the Global South while making clear that cartographic reforms cannot be used to undermine its sovereign borders.
