Indonesian Wildfire Smoke Spreads Across Southeast Asia as WMO Prepares Global Air Quality Bulletin
Smoke and haze from forest and peatland fires in Indonesia have crossed borders into Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines, causing air quality to deteriorate significantly across the region. Driven by dry conditions and prevailing winds, the drifting smoke has raised concentrations of fine particulate matter PM2.5 to unhealthy levels, prompting local authorities to issue health advisories, suspend outdoor activities, and monitor spikes in respiratory illnesses.
Health and environmental agencies stress that continuous monitoring of fire hotspots, accurate forecasting of smoke trajectories, and issuing timely public warnings are critical to protecting communities. Because microscopic wildfire particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, early warnings allow schools, businesses, and vulnerable individuals-including children, the elderly, and those with asthma-to take immediate precautions like wearing masks, using air purifiers, and staying indoors.
