The US economy added a surprise 162,000 jobs in August to ease fears of a recession

·

The United States economy staged a strong comeback in August, adding 162,000 new jobs-nearly triple the roughly 53,000 positions economists had predicted. The official unemployment rate held steady at 4.1%, reassuring workers and businesses that the job market is not sliding into a summer slump. Adding to the positive news, government revisions showed July actually gained 21,000 jobs instead of the 23,000 job losses initially feared.
Most of the new hiring occurred in everyday service jobs and local communities. Restaurants and bars drove the surge by adding 59,000 positions, while local public schools brought in 42,000 workers as the school year began. Manufacturing and construction also saw steady hiring gains, though the tech and media industry remained a notable weak spot after shedding 23,000 positions.
For regular employees, average pay nudged up 10 cents to $37.75 per hour, marking a 3.1% increase over the past year. However, a strong job market can be a mixed blessing for everyday borrowers. Because solid hiring keeps the economy running warm, the Federal Reserve is under less pressure to lower borrowing costs, meaning interest rates on credit cards, car loans, and home mortgages will likely stay higher for longer.
