Government Restricts Common Cold Medicine Combinations for Children Below Four Years of Age

The Central Government has officially restricted the manufacture, sale, and distribution of fixed dose combination (FDC) medicines containing Chlorpheniramine Maleate and Phenylephrine Hydrochloride for children under four years of age. These active ingredients are commonly used in popular syrups and drops prescribed to treat cold, runny nose, congestion, and allergic symptoms in infants and toddlers.
The policy decision was implemented following detailed safety evaluations and recommendations from an Expert Committee and the Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB). Health regulators observed that administering this specific drug combination carries potential health hazards for young children under four, particularly when safer and more appropriate single-ingredient alternatives are readily available for pediatric care.

Under the new regulatory orders, all pharmaceutical companies producing these formulations must strictly update their product packaging and literature. Manufacturers are mandated to display a clear, prominent warning stating that the fixed dose combination shall not be used in children below four years of age across all medicine labels, package inserts, and promotional materials to ensure parents, pharmacists, and medical practitioners avoid administering them to young kids.
