"Health Emergency Warning!" Deadly Cholera Outbreak Grips Myanmar’s Largest City Yangon, Over 500 Hospitalised and 149 Test Positive!

A major public health emergency has struck Myanmar's largest commercial hub, Yangon, as a fast-spreading outbreak of severe acute diarrhoea and cholera has sent more than 500 people rushing to hospitals within a single week. According to official confirmations made by Yangon Region's Social Affairs Minister Bo Htay, rapid diagnostic tests have confirmed 149 positive cholera cases among the hospitalised patients, with the National Public Health Laboratory formally verifying multiple cases caused by the deadly Vibrio cholerae bacteria.
The sudden outbreak has been linked to drinking water contamination during the ongoing monsoon rains, compounded by a struggling municipal healthcare and sanitation network after years of civil conflict. While daily hospital admissions peaked at over 100 cases on Thursday before beginning to stabilise, emergency health teams are currently conducting intensive epidemiological surveillance, chlorinating water sources, and rolling out community control measures across affected townships to prevent wider transmission.
