"Current in Barricade Rumour Triggers Panic!" Stampede-Like Chaos Outside Ujjain Mahakal Temple Leaves Devotees Injured on Nag Panchami!

A terrifying stampede-like situation unfolded outside the world-famous Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, on Monday after a false rumour claiming that electric current was leaking into police metal barricades triggered sudden chaos among thousands of waiting pilgrims. Devotees from across India had gathered in massive numbers due to the rare, highly auspicious convergence of Sawan Somvar and Nag Panchami to seek blessings at the sacred Shri Nagchandreshwar Temple- a revered sanctum located on the top floor of the Mahakal complex that opens its doors to the public only once a year for 24 hours.

The panic broke out around the bustling Harsiddhi Chauraha and routes connecting Bada Ganesh Temple, Neelkanth Square, and the Kark Raj Parking area. Pilgrims who had been waiting in packed barricaded queues for seven to eight hours suddenly scrambled to escape after whispers of an electric current spread through the crowd. The intense pushing and surging caused temporary shade tents and heavy iron barricades to collapse completely, trapping multiple devotees underneath. Devotees sustained injuries, including leg fractures, cuts, and breathing distress, before being rushed by emergency teams to Charak Hospital and the Ujjain District Hospital for urgent treatment.

Senior administrative officials, including the Ujjain District Collector and the Superintendent of Police, immediately reached the spot to take control, dispel the electrical leak rumours, and restore crowd movement. The Mahakal Temple administration clarified that the inner sanctum remained secure and smooth, with over 6 lakh devotees having darshan of Bhagwan Nagchandreshwar and more than 2 lakh visiting Lord Mahakaleshwar by midday without internal disruption. For everyday pilgrims, the incident highlights how easily unverified rumours can trigger dangerous panic in massive religious gatherings, underscoring the vital need for clear public address announcements and rapid rumor-busting on the ground.
