"Global Food Crisis Warning!" JPMorgan Warns Massive Fertilizer Shock and Hormuz Blockade Could Trigger Worldwide Food Inflation Next Year!
In a stark warning for global agriculture, kitchen budgets, and consumer prices, Wall Street investment banking giant JPMorgan has sounded the alarm on an impending global food crisis that could hit the world next year. According to a comprehensive research report titled "Food Security Is National Security: A Compounding Storm," authored by a team led by London-based senior global economist Nora Szentivanyi at J.P. Morgan Global Research, global food inflation is projected to nearly double-surging from 2.8% in early 2026 to around 5% by the first half of 2027.
The root cause of this brewing storm lies in the severe disruption of chemical fertilizer supplies flowing out of the Middle East. The narrow Strait of Hormuz is the world's most critical chokepoint for crop nutrition, handling approximately 30% to 35% of all globally traded urea and 20% to 30% of global ammonia exports. Ever since regional conflict erupted and naval routes through the strait were choked, daily maritime shipping collapsed by over 90%, causing international urea prices to spike from around $450 per ton to over $700 per ton within weeks. Compounding this supply shock is the emerging threat of a historic Super El Niño climate cycle, which threatens to trigger erratic droughts and unseasonal rainfall across major agricultural belts.
As highlighted in global food security studies published by Chatham House and detailed agronomic analysis from PhycoTerra, the timing of this crisis is unforgiving. Modern agriculture relies heavily on nitrogen fertilizers to nourish crops during the narrow window of spring planting and sowing cycles. If farmers cannot source or afford adequate fertilizer during the sowing period, crop yields inevitably drop. Because three staple grains-rice, wheat, and corn-account for more than half of all global nitrogen fertilizer use, reduced application directly reduces overall harvest volumes.
