Historic Peace Push! South Korean President Lee Jae Myung Proposes Talks to Formally End the Korean War and Halt North Korea’s Nuclear Advance!

In a major diplomatic push to break decades of military hostility, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has formally proposed talks with North Korea to finally end the Korean War and replace the fragile 73-year-old armistice agreement with a permanent peace regime. Delivering his keynote address at South Korea's 81st Liberation Day ceremony in Seoul, Lee called on both Koreas to drop threats of mutual aggression and sit down for dialogue alongside key international stakeholders, emphasizing that open engagement could also serve as the most realistic way to curb Pyongyang's advancing nuclear weapons program.

The Korean War (1950–1953) was halted by a temporary ceasefire signed by the US-led United Nations Command, North Korea, and China, meaning both Koreas have technically remained in a state of war for over seven decades. President Lee proposed three-way talks involving the two Koreas and the United States, or four-way talks including China, to establish lasting security guarantees and build multi-layered safeguards against accidental escalation.

The offer represents a distinct shift toward peaceful coexistence and pragmatic engagement, building on Lee's standing pledge to respect North Korea's political system and rule out unification by absorption. However, sealing a diplomatic breakthrough remains a formidable challenge. Relations between Seoul and Pyongyang have been deeply frozen, with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un previously scrapping the traditional goal of reconciliation, labeling South Korea as its principal hostile adversary, and strengthening strategic defense cooperation with Russia.
