In a major geopolitical and trade development, Russia has officially proposed building a direct overland railway corridor to connect Russia with India and the Indian Ocean. Announced by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin, this ambitious plan seeks to establish a reliable rail line through Central and South Asia to bypass high-risk maritime chokepoints like the Strait of Hormuz and the Bosphorus Strait, guaranteeing uninterrupted trade and energy shipments between the two partner nations.

The proposed railway network considers transit routes extending through Turkmenistan, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan to directly link Russian industrial centers with Indian Ocean ports and the Indian market. By moving cargo over land rather than vulnerable sea lanes, the project aims to cut transit times, reduce shipping expenses, and shield bilateral trade from regional geopolitical disruptions.

While the proposal aligns with India and Russia's goal of reaching $100 billion in annual bilateral trade, executing the project faces significant diplomatic and technical challenges. Building a continuous railway through the region will require complex coordination among Russia, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India-particularly given historical tensions between India and Pakistan-alongside solving technical issues like varying railway track gauges across countries. Despite these hurdles, both countries remain focused on expanding overland transport networks to safeguard their long-term supply chains.
