Beware of WhatsApp 'Boss Scam'! Government Issues Urgent Alert as Fraudsters Impersonate CEOs to Trap Corporate Finance Staff!

The Indian government has issued an urgent cyber security advisory warning corporate employees, finance managers, and accounts staff against a dangerous cyber fraud known as the WhatsApp "Boss Scam." Cybercriminals are actively targeting employees across private companies, startups, and institutions by impersonating top executives like CEOs, Managing Directors, or Company Chairmen to trick workers into making unauthorized, high-value money transfers.

In this sophisticated scam, fraudsters create a WhatsApp profile using the exact photo, full name, and professional details of a real company boss, scraped directly from official corporate websites or LinkedIn. They then text targeted finance employees, claiming to be stuck in a critical board meeting, international flight, or emergency client call where phone calls cannot be answered. Creating a false sense of extreme urgency, the "fake boss" demands that the employee immediately wire company funds to an unknown bank account, settle an overdue vendor invoice, or buy digital gift cards.

To prevent severe financial losses, the government strongly advises all corporate workers and finance teams to strictly enforce internal payment verification protocols. Employees should never process sudden financial requests based solely on messaging app instructions, no matter how senior the sender appears. Always verify any payment demand by calling the executive directly on their known phone number or checking via official corporate email channels. Any fraudulent transaction should be reported immediately to the national cybercrime helpline at 1930 or logged online at cybercrime.gov.in.
