In an aggressive move to break China's global monopoly on critical minerals and high-tech energy storage, US President Donald Trump has announced a massive funding package of over $2 billion for American mining and battery companies. Speaking at a White House roundtable with industry leaders, Trump emphasized that essential minerals required for defense weapons, electric vehicles, and smartphones must be mined and refined on domestic soil rather than relying on Chinese suppliers. This government cash injection comes as Beijing continues to tighten its strict export controls on rare earths, battery-grade graphite, and key metals, creating major supply risks for Western industries.
The single largest portion of this funding-a $1.4 billion loan commitment-is going directly to battery tech firm Sila Nanotechnologies to scale up silicon-carbon battery anode production and build a lithium-ion battery cell manufacturing plant in Washington state. Another $400 million is allocated to Sunrise Energy Metals to establish the world's first primary scandium mine for heat-resistant military aircraft alloys, alongside $150 million for Niron Magnetics to produce rare-earth-free permanent magnets for defense hardware. Additionally, $85 million is designated for high-temperature bauxite supplies, paired with $58 million in financing for domestic graphite and boron processing projects.
This $2 billion rollout forms part of a larger economic agenda by the Trump administration, which has approved nearly $40 billion across 160 mineral-related transactions to rebuild domestic supply ecosystems from the ground up. To ensure long-term operational strength, the government is also allocating $180 million to U.S. mining universities to train a new workforce of specialized mining engineers. By funding local mines, refining facilities, and battery manufacturing plants, the US aims to secure its technological supply chain and protect its economy from foreign trade disruptions.
