Shocking Environmental Wake-Up Call! India Ranks 176th Out of 177 Countries in Global Green Index as Estonia Tops and Laos Hits Bottom!

The latest Environmental Performance Index (EPI) 2026, published biennially by researchers at Yale University and Columbia University, has placed India at a dismal 176th rank out of 177 countries with a overall score of 22.46 out of 100. European nation Estonia secured the top 1st position with a score of 74.79, while India finished second from the bottom-trailing behind all South Asian neighbors including Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, with only Laos ranking lower at the absolute 177th spot.
Evaluating nations across 47 indicators spanning 12 environmental categories, the detailed report highlighted major ecological vulnerabilities across the country. India ranked near the bottom in Air Quality (174th) due to severe urban PM2.5 exposure, and in Biodiversity & Forest Protection (174th) owing to tree cover loss in key natural habitats. On a positive note, India performed relatively better in Climate Change Action (130th) and Sanitation & Waste Management (141st), recording a positive 10-year progress score of +7.47 thanks to rapid solar expansion, mass electrification, and renewable energy mandates.
The study highlighted an acute "development-versus-pollution tension" as millions of citizens gain access to modern energy while urban air quality and emissions suffer. However, Indian policymakers and climate analysts have raised strong objections against the index methodology, pointing out that it ignores India's low per-capita emissions, historical carbon contributions by developed Western nations, and structural developmental needs. Regardless of methodological debates, environmental experts stress that immediate national focus is needed on strict urban air pollution controls, river cleanup, pesticide management, and forest conservation to ensure sustainable living for millions.
