No More Fake AI Videos! Government Orders Social Media Apps to Delete Deepfakes in Just 3 Hours or Face Strict Action!

·

The Indian government has officially tightened cyber regulations under the updated IT Rules 2026 Amendment to protect common citizens from dangerous AI deepfakes, synthetic impersonation, and viral digital scams. Under these strict new mandates, major social media platforms like Instagram, X, YouTube, and Facebook are now legally required to remove unlawful or flagged AI-generated content within just 3 hours of receiving a government or court order, drastically down from the earlier 36-hour window. To safeguard personal safety, any non-consensual explicit deepfakes or morphed intimate images must be wiped off the internet within a 2-hour deadline.

To prevent everyday users from being tricked by realistic fake media, the new rules make it compulsory for all platforms to display prominent, non-removable "AI-Generated" visual labels and audio disclaimers on all artificially created or edited photos and videos. Additionally, tech platforms must embed permanent digital fingerprints and hidden metadata into AI content, allowing law enforcement agencies to quickly trace deepfakes back to the creator or the exact software tool used. Users uploading media will also have to declare whether their posts were created or altered using AI tools before sharing them online.

If social media platforms fail to meet these strict 3-hour takedown deadlines, they will instantly lose their "Safe Harbour" legal immunity under Section 79 of the IT Act. Stripping this protection means platform companies can be dragged to court and prosecuted directly as publishers for hosting harmful content. For the common man, the government's message is simple: always check for AI labels on viral media, never share unverified morphed videos, and report suspicious deepfakes to cyber crime authorities immediately.
